Cambria
Cambria offers an ideal base for anyone looking for a weekend filled with long beach walks or hikes into the hills.
Moonstone Drive, along
Moonstone Beach off Windsor, follows the coast on a scenic loop that parallels
Highway 1. It offers a variety of
lodging and dining options as well as wonderful shopping, but don't miss the
natural lure of the area. You can take a walk on the boardwalk that follows the bluffs or rockhound on the beach.
Rather than the more common white sand beaches of southern California, Moonstone Beach is made up of small
pebbles, polished smooth by the sea.
Spend some time combing the sand for driftwood and gemstones; you're sure to find hidden treasures including
jasper,
jade, and the moonstone agates for which the beach is named.
Leffingwell Landing is also found along Moonstone Beach Drive. North of the parking lot stands a cypress grove
that shades picnic tables. This is a good location for spotting
sea otters, since they frequent the rocky tide-pool
area and kelp beds just offshore.
Shamel County Park offers nice picnic areas, beaches, tidepools and vantage points for watching
sea lions
cavorting among the waves
The picturesque town of Cambria is located just south of
San Simeon on California's Central Coast. It rises from the rocky
shoreline into hills covered by Monterey Pines. The village itself,
(population: 7000), sits deep in a knoll between wooded slopes.
Quaint, yet bustling, Cambria's 19th-century cottages and lush
gardens blend seamlessly with galleries, upscale
restaurants
and eclectic boutiques.

Flood project to close Cambria Drive.
Highway 1 traffic will be detoured and another heavily used local road closed for over a month as work gets
underway on a long-awaited project intended to prevent a repeat of devasting flooding that hit Cambria’s West
Village in 1995. Work is expected to start
March 19, weather permitting.
The first phase of the $4.8 million project will require a bypass on Highway 1 near Santa Rosa Creek Bridge.
Work will also close Cambria Road, the heavily used, short street east of the Veterans Memorial Building and west
of Rabobank that connects Main Street and Highway 1.
The project includes building a higher Highway 1 bridge across Santa Rosa Creek, creating channels for flood water
under the bridge and highway and completing the Cross-Town Trail’s link to Main Street.
